Maternity Pay
Now this is a thought that sometimes comes into our head whilst we are pregnant - "how am I going to afford this baby?!" So we are here to help you understand what you're entitled to with your maternity pay.
If you have recently had a job or currently have one you could be entitled to the following:
- Statutory maternity pay (this is the legal minimum your employer can pay you)
- Contractual maternity pay (some employers offer this instead of the statutory maternity pay - your employer should tell you this if not it will be available to find our from HR or the employer maternity policy)
- Maternity allowance (you will get this from the government if you are unable to get statutory maternity pay from your employer)
Statutory Maternity pay
how to get it? are you entitled to it?
- Need to be working with your employer for a minimum of 26 weeks before you reach the 25th week of pregnancy (or 15 weeks before the due date of your baby)
- your average pay, before tax must be at least £123 a week.
- Confirm to your employer of your pregnancy from a form from the midwife (known as a MATB1, this form can be obtained after the 20 week scan) this can be done electronically, again at least 15 weeks before your due date.
- tell your employer at least 28 days notice of when you'd like your maternity pay to start e.g. 1st may for the pay to start- tell them 20th March latest.
The last thing that you think about is considering all the paperwork and sorting out your pay whilst you're on maternity leave, but is it very important, so we have provided some links below to help you along the journey of understanding what you're entitled to and when to inform your employers.
